Heritage Prepared Lime Putty Mortar (Type L)
Suitable for historic masonry structures constructed before 1871
This restoration mortar formulation contains no Portland cement. Portland cement was not made in the United States until the early 1870s and is generally not recommended for early American masonry. Portland cement-based mortars tend to be impermeable, which can lead to serious damage in historic masonry walls that rely on the mortar to wick water out of the wall system, whereas lime wicks the moisture from the walls. Mortar joints historically provided allowance for wall movement, and our lime putty mortar permits the wall to expand and contract without causing the cracking and spalling that is often seen when a modern high-strength mortar is installed in a historic structure.

This specialty mortar is breathable and flexible, and it protects friable masonry units from moisture and freeze-thaw damage. (For more information on selecting an appropriate mortar for repointing historic masonry buildings, please read the National Park Service Preservation Brief #2 Repointing Mortar Joints in Historic Buildings.)

Although it is specifically designed for early masonry, this cement-free formula is also recommended for transitional structures (1872-1931) in the absence of mortar analysis. Mortar should always be more flexible than the masonry units, so a pure lime mortar is a safer choice than other mortar formulations that may be be too rigid.

This mortar is packaged as a wet blend with sand. Cured color is white. Also available by special request in 42 colors. We blend our special request mortars using only natural mineral pigments.
