Material Testing & Analysis
U.S. Heritage Group, Inc. is a pioneer in the field of historic mortar testing, analysis, and custom material production. We bring together information from site evaluations, examination of existing masonry wall design, and advanced material matching techniques to produce a report explaining the components of the mortar as well as a sample of custom-blended mortar that is unique to the project. The resulting replacement blend replicates the original mortar in both appearance and performance while meeting the criteria of the National Park Service Preservation Brief 2, Repointing Mortar Joints in Historic Buildings.
We offer two standard Material Matching Service packages. They differ primarily in the extent and method of scientific testing. The right choice for your project will depend on the specifics of the necessary repairs. We will keep your report on file, and you can order custom blended materials that reflect the findings of the tests at anytime.
This package is the most comprehensive testing service we offer. Package A offers petrographic and chemical analysis to identify the proportions of the original binder and original sand in the mortar. The package includes a detailed report of our findings and a 10-pound custom mortar. The cost is $1,495.00 per sample.

This package offers an economical alternative to the extensive testing of Package A. Package B includes identification of the original binder and matching of the original sand with test methods developed by USHG. The package includes a detailed report of our findings and a 10-pound custom mortar. The cost is $740.00 per sample.
